This year SMIF, the only Asian film competition held in Madrid will present the Focus Zero Chou “On the limits of desire”, for the first time in Spain. After the past retrospectives dedicated by SMIF to Asian cinema masters such as Osamu Tezuka, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, or Tsai Ming-Liang, the festival now pays tribute to one of the most important directors in new Taiwanese cinema, as well as one of the most important filmmakers in the LGTBIQ + Asian film scene. From October 2nd to 10th and through the SMIF ON channel on this website, four fiction feature films made by Zero Chou will be able to be seen, starting with “Spider Lilies”, awarded with the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival for the best LGTBIQ + themed film in 2007, up to his recent “Wrath of Desire” (2020), all of them unpublished in Spain. Within Focus Zero Chou, they will have two online meetings with the director and Spanish filmmakers and lectures, which you can discover in the Festival’s Activities section.

Zero Chou
Zero Chou was born in Keelung, Taiwan in 1969. She received a BA in Philosophy from National Chengchi University in 1992. She worked as a journalist and documentary filmmaker before becoming an independent film director.
Chou is one of the few openly lesbian filmmakers in Asia. She is currently filming a series of six films called the Six Asian Cities Rainbow Project
